It gives me great pleasure to bring out the first historic issue of the International Journal of Microwave and Optical Technology (IJMOT), a new online journal. This is one of the very few journals in the world where microwaves and optical technology have been combined. This certainly fulfills the long cherished desire of researchers who are working in both of these areas separately or as microwave photonics. They can now publish their work as full length papers in this new journal. Another important objective of the journal is to publish the work of these researchers in a very short time. Our ultimate ambitious goal is to publish the papers in 4-5 weeks after their submission so that the people working in these areas can know the latest research going on in the field before it becomes outdated.

The first issue is a special issue containing invited papers only on the topics of EM, microwaves related areas, optical technology and microwave photonics from experts from all over the world. The second issue of IJMOT will publish the papers presented in the 10th International Symposium on Microwave and Optical Technology (ISMOT-2005) held in Fukuoka- Japan from August 22-25, 2005. We hope to publish IJMOT on a quarterly basis for the time being and on monthly basis in the near future.
The publication of this new online journal would not have been possible without the advice, support, encouragement and help provided by the Editorial Advisory Board Members and the Associate Editors for taking great responsibility for regional review of the papers.
I am very grateful to Prof. Kiyotoshi Yasumoto, Symposium Chair and the Organizing Committee of 10th International Symposium on Microwave and Optical Technology (ISMOT-2005) held in Fukuoka- Japan from August 22-25, 2005 for providing initial financial support for starting IJMOT. I am also very thankful to the members of the International Advisory Committee of ISMOT for approving the part of every future ISMOT budget as a financial support for IJMOT. Prof. Yasumoto has been closely associated with IJMOT from the very beginning, and has provided necessary support, guidance and encouragement for its realization.
My special thanks to our Web Manager Mr. Anand Reddy for designing and developing the IJMOT Website from scratch and for giving the present shape to it. He has been working very hard with me on this project for the last three years with wonderful experience including abandoning it completely at one time due to technical frustration. The help provided by my graduate student Sivakumar Lanka in editing the first issue of IJMOT is highly appreciated.
I am very thankful to my wife Shanti, daughter Manita and son Sahit for bearing with me while I was busy with the realization of IJMOT. I think I owe them a long international vacation possibly after my retirement.
Last but not the least, I am very thankful to the Administration of the Electrical Engineering Department and the University of Nevada, Reno, USA for giving me an opportunity to devote some time on this special project along with my other academic responsibilities.
